Sergio 2

Sergio Mullens, a Cape Flats Athlete, is 1 of 25 athletes that have qualified and been selected to represent South Africa in the Beijing Olympics 2008.

Sergio, 28 yrs old, represented South Africa in the All African Games in Ethiopia to participate in the 100m sprint, 200m sprint and the 4 x 100m relay event.

He participated in the 4 x 100m relay in the overall team time of 38.75 secs and this time won the South African Team, Gold.  This allowed the team to qualify for the 4 x 100m relay in Beijing Olympics 2008 and the World Championships next year.

Sergio started training sprints in a park in Mitchells Plain on the Cape Flats, 12 years ago and his coach of then, Sharief Jefferies, is still his coach today.  This shows the dedication, commitment and perseverance of a previously disadvantaged athlete whose dream to represent South Africa in the Olympics, has come true. Sergio is a role model within his community and his motivation is what provides hope for future athletes from the Cape Flats.
